Pittsfield Promise makes the city a charter member in the Campaign for Grade Level Reading, a national movement of local leaders, nonprofits and foundations focusing intently on third-grade reading proficiency. Education experts recognize that third grade marks the point where children shift from learning to read and reading to learn. Students who haven't mastered reading by the end of third grade are more likely to get stuck in a cycle of academic failure, to drop out of school, and to struggle throughout their lives.
The city-wide Pittsfield Promise has set a goal to have at least 90% of Pittsfield third graders reading at grade level by 2020. received an All America City Award from the Campaign for Grade Level Reading in July 2012 for its ambitious plan to ensure that more children are reading at grade level, and also received Pacesetter Awards in 2013 and 2014. Pittsfield Promise is also proud to be working with other Massachusetts communities on a Massachusetts Reading Proficiency Network and working with other states in New England through the regional chapter for the Campaign for Grade Level Reading, both led by Strategies for Children.
Strategies for Success
DID YOU KNOW that 90% of a child's brain develops during the first three year of her or his life?
We realize the first years of life set the stage for future success. Over the past three years, we have moved our focus to ensure that all children living in Pittsfield under the age of five are on a path to school success. Everyone in the community - families, schools, health and service providers, businesses, and cultural insitutions - has a role to play to ensure that all our kids are on the right track. Pittsfield Promise has identified the following strategies to mobilize the community:
- Coordinating with health care providers to ensure access to quality healthcare
- Increase access to birth to 3rd grade early childhood programs and services
- Continuously improve program quality for birth to 3rd grade early childhood programs and services
- Continue to develop marketing and communications to promote Pittsfield Promise
