Development Director

Reports to: President and CEO

Supervises: Development and Marketing Staff

Position Summary

As Development Director at Berkshire United Way you will design, implement, evaluate, and continuously improve fundraising and donor engagement strategies that advance our role as the nonprofit that transforms philanthropy into action and positive change for people in Berkshire County. You will lead and inspire a team that is committed to grow Berkshire United Way's overall revenue; engage, retain, and steward individual and institutional donors; use data to promote continuous improvement; and bring Berkshire United Way’s mission, vision, and brand to life through communications that elevate our mission, and create interest in joining our efforts.

While your primary responsibility will be to meet and exceed Berkshire United Way’s fundraising and campaign goals, you also will contribute actively to advancing our mission, vision, and strategic priorities as a member of the leadership team and partner with Berkshire United Way’s Board of Directors.

Key Responsibilities

  • Define and achieve alignment from the President and CEO and Board of Directors on Berkshire United Way’s Community Impact and Development goals.
  • Build a collaborative and constructive relationship with the President and CEO and Board of Directors.
  • Model and advance Berkshire United Way's commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging in all fundraising, communications, and programs.
  • Develop, implement, assess, and continuously improve a strategic and comprehensive fundraising plan to achieve or exceed annual revenue goals through major gifts, planned giving, corporate relationships, individual giving, and special events.
  • Develop, implement, assess, and continuously improve strategies for individual, leadership and planned giving; solicit major gifts from a portfolio of current and prospective donors.
  • Develop, implement, assess, and continuously improve corporate engagement strategies that establish partnerships with new businesses and markets throughout Berkshire County and furthers those already established.
  • Develop, implement, assess, and continuously improve strategies to diversify Berkshire United Way revenue streams, with a focus on foundation and institutional grants and sponsorships.
  • Develop and manage the Development budget. 
  • Set the marketing and communication strategy in support of Berkshire United Way's mission and strategy, including branding, public relations, advertising, and print and electronic materials.

Job Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher.
  • 5+ years related experience and progressive leadership in a corporate or nonprofit organization, at least 3 of which were at an organization with at least $3 million in revenue; United Way experience is highly desirable.
  • A proven history of high-level fundraising or business development results based on building strong, lasting relationships with donors.
  • Ability to speak passionately and with credibility to the importance of equity as a key factor for improving lives through our mission, vision, and strategic priorities.
  • Exceptional planning and execution skills with a results-oriented record of achievement; the ability to set goals, meet deadlines and evaluate results.
  • Proficiency with donor database systems and the ability to use data to measure and evaluate fundraising performance and drive decisions.
  • Excellent written and oral communication and networking skills with the ability to engage, inspire and educate in personal meetings, group settings and in writing.
  • Strong supervisory skills and experience recruiting and leading effective teams.

Compensation and Benefits

The Development Director is a full-time exempt, in person position. Starting salary is commensurate with relevant experience, within the framework of the organization’s operating budget, and in the range of $ 85,000 to $95,000 annually. An excellent benefits package includes medical and dental coverage with no waiting period, employer-paid life and long-term disability insurance, a flexible medical spending account, 403(b) with employer contributions, generous paid time off, and 11 paid holidays per year.

Overview

Do you have a passion for making the connections and telling the stories that inspire people to give back in your community? Berkshire United Way is looking for a dynamic, detail-oriented professional to coordinate, lead, and make continuous improvements to approximately 80 employee giving campaigns, and to engage and motivate individuals and businesses to share their time and talent with the community as volunteers.

As Workplace and Volunteer Engagement Coordinator, you will have the opportunity to develop relationships with local employers to sustain and grow BUW’s workplace fundraising program. You will have the chance to use your creativity to develop and implement innovative ideas, connect with donors and communicate the impact, power, and necessity of BUW’s mission and investment in building a thriving community. You will work collaboratively with colleagues across the organization to raise funds that fuel BUW’s community impact work.

In addition to managing relationships and results for BUW’s workplace fundraising, you also will help recruit and support volunteers to meet identified community needs across Berkshire County. This coordination of volunteer services is an extension of both BUW’s fundraising and community impact work.

Workplace Giving and Fundraising

  • Lead, manage and continuously improve all aspects of annual workplace giving campaign program.
  • Clearly and enthusiastically communicate Berkshire United Way’s mission, vision, strategic priorities, and community impact.
  • Cultivate community support for Berkshire United Way by developing and maintaining positive relationships with local organizations, businesses, and individuals.
  • Train and support employee campaign coordinators and be the main point of contact between local businesses and BUW.
  • Monitor campaign progress and identify opportunities for revenue growth.  
  • Develop and update print and online campaign materials in collaboration with the development team.
  • Provide accurate data and reports on campaign progress to the Development Director, President and CEO, and Board of Directors.
  • Serve as a member of the BUW development team and contribute to all fundraising and community engagement initiatives as directed.
  • Share activities, progress and success stories with communication and marketing staff for use in all BUW communications.

Volunteer Engagement

  • Design, execute, evaluate, and continuously improve BUW’s volunteer engagement strategic plan.
  • Administer BUW’s online volunteer center platform to facilitate the connection between volunteers and community engagement opportunities; seek sponsorship opportunities to cover the cost of the platform.
  • Identify and curate volunteer opportunities at BUW as well as with other nonprofit agencies, as an extension of BUW’s work to create a thriving community across Berkshire County.
  • Recruit, motivate, manage, support, and recognize individual volunteers and corporate teams to meet the needs of the community.
  • Inspire volunteers to deepen their connection by becoming donors to BUW.
  • Share activities, progress and success stories with communication and marketing staff for use in social media, PR, website, eblasts, annual reports and other channels.
  • Align BUW’s volunteer engagement work with the overall BUW mission and brand – create opportunities to promote and recognize BUW’s role as a volunteer organizer.

Job Requirements

To meet the day-to-day responsibilities of this job, be an effective member of the Berkshire United Way team, and be successful in this role, you should possess a combination of the following knowledge and skills:

Knowledge
  • Understanding of fundraising concepts, principles, strategies, and best practices.
  • Awareness of economic, political, and social factors which may affect community needs and fundraising results.
Skills
  • Fundraising experience with emphasis on customer relationship building and/or customer service.
  • Strong written and verbal communication and public speaking skills.
  • Ability to manage several projects simultaneously, track results, meet deadlines, and maintain very strong attention to detail.
  • Must have a positive and collaborative attitude and a strong sense of self-motivation.
  • Knowledge of donor database management is a plus.
  • Proficiency with Windows operating system: MS Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint.
  • Experience managing or using social media platforms for business.  

Schedule Flexibility

Flexible schedule to occasionally attend events that may occur in the early morning, evening, and weekends. In addition, to fulfill the responsibilities of the position, travel to various companies and/or agencies is required within Berkshire County. Employee must have a valid driver’s license and availability of a motor vehicle.  

Compensation and Benefits

This salary range for this full-time, 40-hour-per-week, in-person job is $52,00 to $62,000 and benefits, including health insurance, dental insurance, long-term disability insurance, life insurance, a flexible medical spending account, retirement plan, paid time off, and 11 paid holidays per year.
