President and Chief Executive Officer

KEY RESPONSIBILITY AREAS

 

Leadership Responsibilities

  • Responsible for promoting the public awareness, understanding, acceptance, community volunteerism and support of Berkshire United Way’s mission, goals, and objectives among the various internal and external audiences with which BUW interacts, with specific emphasis on the involvement of diverse constituencies.
  • Represents BUW at conferences, functions and speaking engagements, with other not-for-profit Leaders and with local political representatives, presenting a professional image and advocating for advancement of Community Impact goals.  
  • Develops partnerships with other United Ways, not-for-profit organizations, agency leaders and other organizations.
  • Monitors major changes in the marketplace, both philanthropic and economic, provides strategic direction and assumes responsibility for crisis management.
  • Ensures a process is in place for data gathering and community dialogue to identify community needs and priorities and develops appropriate strategies to address those needs and priorities.
  • Works with Board to develop and implement the strategic plan for the organization.
  • Ensures compliance with Equal Employment Opportunity and Affirmative Action requirements while acting on behalf of the organization, providing supervision for staff members including the assignment of work responsibilities, the assessment of competency, the timely writing and delivery of performance appraisals and salary increases and participation in the hiring process, and makes recommendations to terminate employment relationships as may be necessary.
  • Provide Leadership too all involved with the organization to continually improve our competence in Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion.

 

Relationships with Governing Bodies

  • Keeps Board of Directors aware of issues/trends affecting the organization, provides for board development, and suggests programs/policies which will keep the organization responsive.
  • Acts as an agent of the Board of Directors as designated.
  • Serves as non-voting member of the Board of Directors and ex-officio member of all board standing committees
  • Provides staff support as required to Board, board committees, Community Impact Councils and Campaign Cabinet.

 

Finance and Administration Management

  • With the Finance and Investment Committees, ensures systems of control and financial accounting that meet all AICPA standards and those of all regulatory bodies.
  • In conjunction with the Director of Finance and Administration (DFA) develops for presentation to the Human Resources Committee any proposed revisions of the agency's Human Resources Policy & Procedures manual and with the Finance Committee, presents the annual budget for Board approval.
  • Establishes organizational plans, policies, and procedures necessary for the effective operation of Berkshire United Way.

 

Community Investment and Community Relations

  • Ensures the development and implementation of an efficient and equitable system for the distribution of the funds available for support of community impact strategies.
  • Supervises the Director of Community Impact to ensure a year-round system designed to maximize effectiveness of partner organizations in the delivery of services and initiatives through measurable outcomes. Maintains and encourages open lines of communication with BUW funded partner organizations.
  • Fosters cooperative relationships with area funding/planning bodies, including governmental agencies and other United Ways/Community Chests.
  • Leads local community with assessment of needs and strategies to address those needs through the community investment process and by leveraging other resources.

 

Fundraising

  • With the Director of Donor Engagement (DODE), develops for presentation to the Campaign Cabinet, new programs/strategies that will maximize workplace fundraising results.
  • Works with DODE in the development and management of a year-round plan to engage new individual donors and maintain strong ties to current donors. Participates in donor communication and solicitation.
  • Ensures staff support to resource development strategies and is responsible for ensuring accuracy and accountability in the reporting of fundraising results.
  • With the DODE and the Director of Community Impact, seeks and manages grant funding opportunities to meet the priorities and initiatives of BUW and the community.

 

Communications and Media Relations

  • Ensure the development, implementation, and evaluation of an ongoing program of communications designed to both speak and listen to all significant segments of the community.
  • Represents the policies, procedures, and attitudes of the organization to the media, government, community and organized labor leadership, and other community groups.

 

Volunteer Development Responsibilities

  • Works closely with staff to ensure a centralized and consistent system for volunteer recruitment and retention including Board, Board Committee assignments and other appropriate volunteer functions.

 

Flexible Schedule and Travel Requirement

  • To fulfill the responsibilities of the position, regular travel in Berkshire County to various companies and/or agencies is required. In addition, overnight travel to various seminars, courses, conferences, etc. may also be required.
  • Requires flexible schedule to attend events that may occur in the early morning, evening and on weekends.

 

JOB REQUIREMENTS

A.    EDUCATION:     Bachelor’s degree required; Master’s degree preferred.

B.    EXPERIENCE:   Minimum of 5-8 years of successful and progressive experience in a United Way or similar organization
                                   or field.

C.    KNOWLEDGE:   Expertise in nonprofit management, financial management and human resources is required. Broad
                                   knowledge of human services systems, including an understanding of social service policies and
                                   programs and United Way operations as well as an understanding of resource development strategies.
                                   Knowledge of community political, social, business and economic factors, group processes and
                                   voluntarism strategies.  

D.  SKILLS:

  • Financial management, Personnel administration, Strong experience, and results in, nonprofit fundraising from a diverse source of funding mechanisms including individuals, corporations, foundations and state and federal grant sources.
  • Experience with utilization of data and community input to determine priorities for community investment.
  • Strategic planning, Marketing/Communications
  • Ability to manage a staff of 6-10 professional and support personnel.
  • Ability to gain and maintain the support and confidence of broad and diverse community leadership.
  • Ability to evaluate quality of services and make recommendations for change where necessary.
